Yangon Entry Requirements

Yangon Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and your country's travel advisory service before traveling, as Myanmar's entry requirements and political situation can change rapidly.
Yangon, Myanmar's largest city and former capital, serves as the main international gateway to the country through Yangon International Airport (RGN). Entry requirements for Myanmar have undergone significant changes in recent years, and travelers should be aware that the country's visa policies can be subject to modification. As of the current situation, most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Myanmar, though the application process and requirements vary depending on nationality and purpose of visit. The immigration process at Yangon International Airport is generally straightforward, though it can be time-consuming during peak arrival times. Travelers should ensure all documentation is in order before departure, as Myanmar's immigration authorities are thorough in their checks. It's essential to have a valid passport with at least six months validity beyond your intended stay, confirmed onward travel arrangements, and proof of sufficient funds for your visit. Due to Myanmar's evolving political situation, travelers are strongly advised to check current travel advisories from their home country's foreign ministry before planning their trip. Entry requirements, visa availability, and travel conditions may change with little notice. Always verify the latest information with official Myanmar government sources or your nearest Myanmar embassy or consulate well in advance of your intended travel dates.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Myanmar operates a visa-required entry policy for most nationalities. The eVisa system, when operational, offers a convenient online application process for eligible travelers. However, visa services and entry policies have been subject to changes and suspensions, so verification of current status is essential.

Visa Exemption (Limited)
14-30 days depending on nationality and entry point

Very limited visa-free access is available to certain nationalities under specific conditions

Includes
ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam) - limited exemptions Singapore - 30 days

Visa exemption policies are limited and may only apply to certain entry points or under bilateral agreements. Most travelers, even from ASEAN countries, typically require visas. Always verify current exemption status before travel.

Electronic Visa (eVisa)
28 days for tourist visa; 70 days for business visa

Online visa application system for tourist and business visits (when operational)

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Most EU countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, etc.) Japan South Korea India China Most other countries - check eligibility on official eVisa portal
How to Apply: Apply online at evisa.moip.gov.mm at least 3-5 business days before travel. Processing typically takes 3 working days. Upload passport photo and passport biographical page. Single entry only.
Cost: Tourist visa: approximately USD 50; Business visa: approximately USD 70 (fees subject to change)

The eVisa system has experienced periodic suspensions. Verify that the system is operational before relying on this option. eVisa is valid for entry through Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw airports, and select land borders. Print the approval letter to present upon arrival.

Visa on Arrival
Was typically 28 days when available

Previously available but currently suspended for most travelers

How to Apply: This option has been largely discontinued. Check current availability with Myanmar immigration authorities.

Visa on arrival is generally not available at Yangon International Airport for most nationalities. Do not rely on this option without confirmed advance authorization.

Embassy/Consulate Visa
Typically 28 days (tourist) or 70 days (business), with possible extensions

Traditional visa application through Myanmar embassy or consulate

How to Apply: Apply in person or by mail at your nearest Myanmar embassy or consulate. Submit completed application form, passport photos, passport valid for 6+ months, travel itinerary, and applicable fees. Processing time varies (typically 3-5 business days to several weeks).

This is the most reliable option given periodic eVisa system suspensions. Recommended for travelers who need certainty or are applying well in advance. Some embassies offer express processing for additional fees.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Yangon International Airport, travelers will proceed through immigration control, collect baggage, and pass through customs. The process is generally orderly but can take 30-90 minutes depending on the number of arriving flights. Have all documents readily accessible and be prepared for questioning by immigration officers.

1
Health Screening
Depending on current health protocols, you may undergo temperature screening or health questionnaire completion. Follow all posted health requirement instructions.
2
Immigration Queue
Proceed to the immigration counters. Foreign nationals use designated non-citizen lines. Lines can be long during peak arrival times (morning and evening international flights).
3
Document Inspection
Present your passport, visa (eVisa approval letter or visa sticker), completed arrival card (distributed on flight or available at airport), and any required health documents. Immigration officer will verify your documents, may ask questions about your visit, and stamp your passport.

5
Customs Declaration
Complete customs declaration form if carrying items requiring declaration (large amounts of currency, restricted goods, etc.). Proceed through customs inspection - green channel for nothing to declare, red channel if declaring items.
6

After clearing customs, exit to the public arrivals area where you can arrange transportation, exchange currency, or meet contacts.

Documents to Have Ready

Tips for Smooth Entry

Print all documents including eVisa approval, hotel confirmations, and flight tickets. Don't rely solely on digital copies as internet access may be limited.
Have a pen ready to complete arrival/departure cards during the flight or at the airport. Fill forms in English using block capitals.
Dress respectfully when entering Myanmar. While not strictly enforced, modest clothing creates a positive impression with immigration officials.
Keep small denomination US dollars handy for immediate expenses like SIM cards or transportation, as airport exchange rates may not be favorable.
Take a photo of your passport information page and visa before traveling. Store it separately or in cloud storage as backup.
Be patient and polite with immigration officers. Answer questions directly and honestly. Avoid volunteering unnecessary information.
If traveling for business, have invitation letters and company documentation readily accessible even if not specifically requested.
Check your passport stamp before leaving the immigration counter to ensure it's properly dated and matches your visa validity.

Customs & Duty-Free

Myanmar customs regulations are enforced at all ports of entry. Yangon International Airport has clear customs procedures, and travelers must declare items exceeding duty-free allowances or any restricted/prohibited goods. Penalties for non-declaration can be severe, including fines and confiscation. When in doubt, declare items.

Alcohol
2 liters of alcoholic beverages
Must be 18 years or older. Bottles should be unopened. Excess quantities subject to duty.
Tobacco
400 cigarettes or 100 cigars or 500 grams of tobacco
Must be 18 years or older. For personal use only. Excess quantities may be confiscated or taxed.
Currency
Foreign currency exceeding USD 10,000 (or equivalent) must be declared
Declare all currency amounts over USD 10,000 on arrival using customs declaration form. Undeclared amounts may be confiscated. Keep declaration form for departure. Myanmar Kyat cannot be imported or exported.
Perfume
Reasonable quantity for personal use (typically up to 150ml)
Commercial quantities will be questioned and may require duty payment.
Gifts/Personal Goods
Personal effects and goods up to USD 500 in value
Must be for personal use and not for commercial purposes. New items in original packaging may be questioned.

Prohibited Items

  • Narcotics and illegal drugs of any kind - severe penalties including lengthy imprisonment
  • Weapons, firearms, ammunition, and explosives - unless with special prior authorization
  • Pornographic materials in any format (magazines, videos, digital files)
  • Items depicting or insulting Buddha or Buddhist religion - treated very seriously
  • Counterfeit currency or goods
  • Endangered species products (ivory, certain animal skins, etc.) - Myanmar is CITES signatory
  • Satellite phones and certain telecommunications equipment - require special permits
  • Drones and aerial photography equipment - special authorization required, often denied
  • Playing cards (technically restricted though enforcement varies)
  • Any materials deemed politically sensitive or threatening to national security

Restricted Items

  • Prescription medications - bring only personal supply with doctor's prescription and original packaging. Carry prescription letter in English if possible. Some medications legal elsewhere may be restricted.
  • Professional camera and video equipment - may require temporary import permit and deposit. Declare all professional equipment.
  • Laptops and electronic devices - generally allowed but may be inspected. Multiple devices may be questioned.
  • Religious materials - Buddhist items generally fine, but materials from other religions may be scrutinized. Avoid proselytizing materials.
  • Antiques and cultural artifacts - cannot be exported without Department of Archaeology authorization. Do not purchase antiques unless certain of export legality.
  • Gemstones and jewelry - commercial quantities require documentation. Personal jewelry should be declared if valuable.
  • Binoculars and telescopes - may be questioned, particularly high-powered equipment

Health Requirements

Health requirements for entry to Myanmar vary depending on your travel history and current global health situations. While Myanmar does not require extensive vaccinations for most travelers, certain vaccines are mandatory if arriving from countries with specific disease risks. Health protocols may change, particularly regarding pandemic-related requirements.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - vaccination certificate required if arriving from or transiting through countries with yellow fever transmission risk (parts of Africa and South America). Certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival. Not required if only transiting through airport without leaving transit area.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A - recommended for all travelers due to food and water risks
  • Typhoid - recommended, especially if visiting smaller cities or rural areas
  • Hepatitis B - recommended for longer stays or if you might have medical procedures
  • Japanese Encephalitis - recommended for extended stays, especially in rural areas or during rainy season
  • Rabies - consider if you'll have animal contact or be in remote areas far from medical care
  • Routine vaccinations - ensure up to date with measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and yearly flu shot
  • COVID-19 - check current requirements, though vaccination mandates have been largely lifted

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Myanmar's healthcare facilities are limited, particularly outside Yangon, and medical evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore may be necessary for serious conditions. Ensure your policy covers Myanmar specifically, as some insurers exclude certain countries. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers. Many hospitals require upfront payment or insurance guarantee before treatment.

Current Health Requirements: COVID-19 related requirements have been significantly relaxed but may still exist. Check the latest entry requirements regarding COVID-19 testing, vaccination certificates, or quarantine before travel. Visit Myanmar's Ministry of Health website or contact your airline for current protocols. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended if traveling outside Yangon to certain regions - consult a travel medicine specialist. Bring adequate supplies of any prescription medications as specific brands may not be available. Tap water is not safe to drink - use bottled or purified water only.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children require their own passport and visa. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from absent parent(s) authorizing travel, including contact information and copy of parent's passport. If traveling with only one parent, bring child's birth certificate showing both parents' names. Single parents should carry evidence of sole custody if applicable. Adopted children should have adoption papers. Myanmar immigration may question children traveling with adults who don't share their surname.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Myanmar is complex and requires advance planning. Required documents include: valid rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), health certificate from licensed veterinarian issued within 7 days of travel, import permit from Myanmar Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (apply at least 30 days in advance), microchip identification recommended. Pets must undergo quarantine inspection upon arrival. Some breeds may be restricted. Airlines have specific pet travel requirements. Consider whether pet travel is necessary as facilities and veterinary care are limited. Contact Myanmar embassy for current import regulations well in advance.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas typically allow 28 days and can sometimes be extended once for an additional 14 days through the Immigration Department in Yangon (fees apply, not guaranteed). For longer stays, consider applying for a business visa (70 days, potentially extendable) if you have legitimate business purpose with invitation letter from Myanmar company. Long-term stays require appropriate visa category (business, employment, research, etc.) with sponsorship. Overstaying your visa results in fines (approximately USD 3 per day), potential detention, and future entry bans. If you need to extend, apply well before visa expiry. Some travelers exit to neighboring countries and return with new visa, but this is not officially encouraged and may be questioned.

Journalists and Media Professionals

Journalists, reporters, and media professionals must obtain special journalist visas before arrival - tourist visas cannot be used for journalistic work. Contact Myanmar embassy with detailed information about your assignment, media organization, and itinerary. Unauthorized journalism can result in arrest, detention, and deportation. Even carrying professional camera equipment on tourist visa may raise questions. Myanmar has strict media regulations and has detained foreign journalists. If your work involves any media production or reporting, obtain proper authorization.

Dual Nationals and Myanmar Citizens

If you hold Myanmar citizenship (even dual citizenship), you must enter Myanmar on your Myanmar passport, not foreign passport. Myanmar does not officially recognize dual citizenship, though enforcement varies. Those with Myanmar heritage should clarify their status with Myanmar embassy before travel. Former Myanmar citizens may face complications and should seek official guidance.

Visitors to Restricted Areas

Many areas in Myanmar require special permits beyond standard tourist visa, including certain states (Chin, Kachin, Kayah) and border regions. Travel restrictions change frequently due to security situations. Permits must be obtained through licensed travel agencies, not independently. Some areas are completely off-limits to foreigners. Traveling to restricted areas without permits can result in arrest, fines, and deportation. Check current restrictions for your intended destinations before finalizing travel plans.
